Chopping ice for water in an Antarctic blizzard in the heroic age

The Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration was an era which began around 1895 and ended with the Shackleton–Rowett Expedition of 1921–22. Some historians consider that it ended after the First World War (1918). However, I prefer the 1921-22 date since it was Shackleton’s last voyage. He died on the trip.

This was the age of Scott, Shackleton, Amundsen and Mawson and many others. Seventeen men would die on the various expeditions of the Heroic Age but our knowledge of our world was vastly increased

This era of Antarctic exploration relied on human or animal power (dogs, ponies and donkeys) to transport equipment and supplies on the Antarctic continent. It was replete with stories of endurance and survival but its scope was limited to the supplies of food and fuel that a team could manhaul or dog-sledge. Though it achieved much it finally gave way to what is known as the Mechanical Age.
