Antarctica is the catalyst for a number of conspiracies, from a secret Nazi/Alien UFO base to the flat Earth to the prison for the fallen angels in the Book of Enoch (see here). Are there conspiracies in the world? Yes. But instead of being about secret bases and aliens the real conspiracies involve simply money and/or power, and so it is with climate change.
The Earth has been warming for many decades and in spite of the denials of a vocal group of deniers it continues to do so and the cause is us and our dedication to fossil fuels amongst other things.
It is so obvious now that the vast majority of climate scientists accept it as an indisputable fact. There are a couple who disagree amongst thousands but they get well funded by a group of, usually US based, conservative/libertarian think tanks that receive funding from the fossil fuel industry or ideologically driven billionaires.
These same think tanks rose to the aid of the beleaguered tobacco industry when cigarettes were accused of causing lung cancer. In fact, some of the scientists that worked to discredit the health issues associated with tobacco are now the ones writing the articles that state that climate change isn’t happening, or if it is, it’s not because of us.
They are smart, articulate and well-funded and their aim is to grab your hearts and minds and keep you either confused, or convinced that climate change is a scam. Or that acceptance that fossil fuels are a problem might reflect badly on capitalism and somehow lead to a slide toward socialism and their greatest fear…communism. None of which is likely to happen.
By constantly bombarding the public with misinformation the end result is a lack of momentum in tackling the issue. They love to take information out of context and cherry pick results. Sometimes they just outright lie. They will provide you with ‘science’ to back up their claims and when you reply with actual science they will throw more ‘science’ at you. They want the debate to go on endlessly and buy them time for the money to keep rolling in. That’s understandable. It’s self preservation.
The downside is that the Earth gets warmer and the ocean temperature has been rising for many decades. They will tell you that NASA says the Earth is in a solar minimum which basically means the sun is not as hot and things are actually cooling down. This is very true that we are in a solar minimum and normally things would cool, but this time around all that’s happening is that the upper atmosphere is cooling and things continue to heat up down here. They left that bit out.
West Antarctica is warming up. Mussels have recently been found there, an invasive species that can live there now because it is warmer. Krill, the basis of the Antarctic food chain, are moving south to cooler waters but they can only go so far before they runinto the Antarctic continent. Glaciers are receding and the temperature of the ocean water in West Antarctica has risen faster than most places on this planet.
They claim that the Arctic isn’t melting and yet, Russia, China and other countries are sending resources to the Arctic to take advantage of the melting ice with plans to exploit the minerals and oil that are becoming uncovered. Cruise lines and shipping companies are penetrating further into the Arctic as the ice retreats and committing extra ships. Polar bears, which need see ice in order to hunt seals, descending on towns for food but the climate deniers love to quote articles by a zoologist who has no experience with polar bears and is in fact, a specialist in dogs, which say the bears are fine. But when she can’t help but abuse the left-wing in her articles you know this is ideologically driven rather than based on science.
So, remember this is about hearts and minds. Don’t let them take yours. Whatever they say, do a google search and ask ‘Is what they say true?’. Look at where the article is coming from. Is it in a peer-reviewed journal or did it come from a conservative think tank? They are losing so they are trying harder. They are dinosaurs but they don’t realise their time of dominion is over.
